What a curator hears as a fit
Mid-range, always
Tones between roughly 100 hertz and 2 kilohertz sit under speech and typing without fighting them. That is where a drone can stay all day.
Length as the point
A single tone that holds for half an hour is a session on its own. The longer the piece, the fewer seams a curator has to sequence around.
Why tracks get turned down
- Sub-bass. A long low tone beats against noise-cancelling headphones and rattles a small speaker; both send listeners to the volume control.
- Harsh high harmonics. A drone that sits at 4 kilohertz or above becomes fatiguing within ten minutes.
- Beating that turns into a rhythm. Two detuned tones can create a pulse, and a pulse the ear locks on to is an event.
Before you send
- High-pass around 80 hertz and low-pass around 4 kilohertz, then listen for a full hour at low volume. Cut anything that starts to hurt.
- Add a slow tremolo or a room instead of more tones. One tone with air beats six tones without.
- Send the longest piece you have. Length is welcome and never the reason a drone is refused.

Is harsh or noisy drone welcome?
